Bringin' Yellow Back

March 18th was a day of madness.
It was the day of the Sea Olympics.

Now let me explain: there are 3 main floors with student’s cabins. Each floor is divided into sections and named after seas. Each sea has one RD. The seas are Adriatic, Bering, Aegean, Baltic, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Red, Arabian and the BEST – the Yellow Sea. Our RD is Matt from Washington. The last sea consists of all the Lifelong Learners and kids on the ship – called the Pacific Ocean. The Sea Olympics is a series of games where the seas compete for bragging rights and the ultimate goal of being first off the ship in San Diego. The last day takes so slow to disembark everyone so it’s a big deal. The competitions are:

Chants/banner
Photo Hunt
Tug-of-war
Juice Pong
Doge ball
Flip cup (with juice sadly)
Relay Race
Basketball
Synchronized swimming
Trivia
Limbo
Dean Mike Says
Lip Syncing

We all signed up last week and got out games through lotto. I got to make the banner and chants, go the relay race and limbo. Matt called Juli, who was doing the chants with me and told her we needed to start. So that day, I sat down and went through my music and changed the lyrics to a bunch of songs:

[Fergie – London Bridge]
Oh ship, oh ship, oh ship
Oh ship, oh ship, oh ship
Oh ship, oh ship, oh ship,
Oh ship, oh ship, oh ship

When we come to the deck step aside (OH SHIP!)
Of all the seas we’re ahead of the line (OH SHIP!)
Yellow sea cause you know we’re gonna shine (OH SHIP!)
Sea Olympics and we’ll win it big time (OH SHIP!)

Yellow sea get down on the floor (OH SHIP!)
Back to back and we’ll kick it real slow (OH SHIP!)
We’re gonna beat ya and you know it’s gonna show (OH SHIP!)
Because we don’t’ give a damn so here we go…(OH SHIP!)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Justin Timberlake – Sexy Back]
We’re bringing yellow back (YEAH)
Them other seas don’t know how to act (YEAH)
You think you’re special but there’s things you lack (YEAH)
So turn around and we’ll pick up the slack (YEAH)
- Take it to the bridge -
Dirty seas you have these shackles baby you’re our slave
We’re gonna whip you at the Olympic games
It’s just that no other sea will feel this way
- Take it to the starboard -
Come here seas (Go Bering go try to win)
Come to the aft (Go Baltic go try to win)
VIP (Caribbean go try to win)
Go yellow sea (Go Arabian go try to win)
Do you see who you’re fighting with? (Go Red go try to win)
Read our lips (Mediterranean go try to win)
Watch our smile (Go Adriatic Bering go try to win)
Come here Matt (Go Aegean go try to win)
Matt: Get your yellow on (Go Yellow we got it) X’s 4
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Jay-Z – Brush Ya Shoulders Off]
Matt: Now tune into the Explorers greatest…
Amanda: If you feelin’ like a winner baby: Go on brush your shoulders off
We are the winners baby: Go on brush your shoulders off
Yellow is crazy baby, don’t forget that sea told ya …
Get … That… Dirt off your shoulder

Amanda: We probably owe it to ya’ll, proud to be part of this force
Trying to win at some games as we go on with this course
Feelin’ no remorse, feelin’ like our glory was forced
Peace sign to the voice baby, grab them walls
Lifelong learners they love us, from the bleachers they screamin’
Desmond Tutu is bouncing, he like the way we be leanin’
All the seas be hatin’ off the track that we’re makin’
But all the teachers they love it, just to see one of us make it
Came from the 3rd deck to the top of the ship
Baby, Bahamas, Japan, and we’re first off the dock
Like a running back, get it man, we’re first off the dock
We can run it back, baby cause we’ll be first off the dock
If you feelin’ like a winner baby: Go on brush your shoulders off
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[the Beatles – Yellow Submarine]
On the ship … of S-A-S
Lives some kids… who sailed to sea
And we’ll tell… you of the day
We won the sea… Olympics!

So we pulled… the tug of war, till we lip synced… to victory
We’re the first… ones off the ship because we are… the yellow sea

We all live in the greatest yellow sea
The greatest yellow sea
The greatest yellow sea

We all live in the greatest yellow sea
The greatest yellow sea
The greatest yellow sea

Juli helped edit it. We sang it to Matt and he loved it. The first night back on the ship after Mauritius, we presented it to our sea… and they loved it! People started to get really excited. We wanted to give some solos out and a few people volunteered. We asked if anyone wanted to rap – but the sea told us that I should rap it. Oh boy. So after the meeting, Juli, Sherri, Monica, Kat and myself made our banner. We drew a submarine approaching a dock made of popsicle sticks with a sign saying ‘GO YELLOW’ and we drew the other seas being blown behind us. It looked great!! We listened to 90s music and had a great time.

The next morning I was up to eat then get ready for our performance. We had yellow paint which we put under everyone’s eyes. The first few groups went: some were good, some were horrible. Then we went up: we started off with “OH SHIP” and everyone started cheering, immediately recognizing the song. The soloists went up and everyone was cheering. After ‘bringing yellow back’ Matt gave me the mic and I began my rap. When I perform, I never hear cheers or see people’s face expression – I simply perform. The only eyes I made contact with… was Desmond Tutu’s. During the one line “Desmond Tutu is bouncin’, he like the way we be leanin’”, I looked at him and his eyes opened up and he smiled. [Side note – Tutu is known for his dance moves. He dances all the time throughout the ship. So the lyric was quite appropriate.] Then we sung the final song and chanted our way off the stage. Sufficient to say – we kicked ass.

However, we came in second. But throughout the whole day – people were coming up to me saying “How did you learn how to rap? Yellow should have won.” Someone also told me that Desmond Tutu even said that we should have won. But it’s alright – we started off strong! Then we had tug-0f-war. Our team kept winning, then winning… then we got to the final round against Baltic. The boys on Baltic were huge. The Tug of War team was a little nervous. The started – the Baltic yanked them to the other side, and they were just about to cross the line and everyone fell. Somehow, Andrew didn’t fall and pulled back. The rope stopped moving. Then slowly, it started moving back towards our side. Everyone got up and pulled and pulled, and the rope kept moving. Eventually they pulled so much that the boat rocked into their favor and they yanked the rope onto our side and WON!! It was a crazy game!!!!

The relay race consisted of flip cup, then water balloon toss, then orange neck pass then a free throw. I was in the orange neck pass. Nate and I practiced in my room with a roll from lunch. We found our strategy: hug the person. My neck was all red because Nate hadn’t shaved and his beard kept scratching my neck. It was hilarious. So we get upstairs and teach the rest of the team. It was so much fun.

Then we watched the synchronized swimming – in the union. The boat was too rocky so there was no water in the pool. So they had to change it to interpretive dance. Some were funny – the Baltic was a bunch of tough boys who came out dancing to “Gangster’s Paradise” then stopped it and changed it to “A Whole New World” and pranced around pretending to swim. They won. Then I took a nap to prepare for limbo. I woke up and stretched with Julie and Laura. We were practicing the night before and we were ready. We head to the top deck and then we realized: we practiced when the boat wasn’t moving and now it was rocking like crazy. So the three of us and another girl on our team started to practice waiting for the boat to rock in our favor. Then everyone started to come upstairs and I realized, I was one of the tallest girls. Every girl was super short. DAMNIT! So we kept stretching, trying to pysch them out. Then it began. My favourite teachers (Joyce and Rocky) were the judges. Bob Salisbury played limbo music and it began. The first few times, no one was out. Then there was one more where it knocked out half of the competition. Also, Rocky said we get extra points for adding some sass. So of course, I did the standard shimmy. Then to get even more attention the next round, I walked up to the pole and leaned back and reached my arms out and pretended to pull myself on a rope under the pole. Everyone cheered obviously. The rest of the Yellow Team did the same: they danced under the pole in our own unique ways – it was beautiful. Then Rocky kneeled on the floor and lowered it to his mid-chest. That knocked out Laura and then it was just Julie, Myself and 4 more girls in other seas. I was the tallest girl left by the few inches. Then the other few girls were knocked out. So it was down to four of us. Then one girl was knocked out, then the other girl semi-did it. Rocky let it slide. She pulled her head sideways instead of back. Lame. So then I went under and waited for the boat to rock in my favor. But then I waited to long and pulled my head up and hit the pole. SO CLOSE. Julie had it though. I love that girl. The other girl kept going sideways but Julie prevailed and pulled it underneath. Finally Rocky stopped it and announced that Yellow won because: we had sass, and truly did the limbo! I lifted Julie up and danced around!! It was so great!!

Then it ended with the lip syncing. Yellow did great – it was Dustin, Kat, Sherri, Mary Jo and they started with “Circle of Life” and Sherri sat in a chair, lip syncing the African lyrics while she gave birth to Dustin. HAHAHHAHAH it was hilarious. Matt announced the winners and the Yellow came in fifth. Not too bad. It didn’t matter, because it was such a fun day.
